Abuja, 3 November 2014
With a renewed drive to restore the faith of Nigerian consumers in the mandate of the Government to protect Nigerian consumers in the marketplace, the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) has partnered with the National Quality Infrastructure Project to build the capacity of the management and staff of the CPC. The kick-off event took place in Abuja on Monday 3rd November 2014, and was chaired by the Director-General of the Consumer Protection Council, Mrs. Dupe Atoki.
A total of 266 CPC staff in eight zonal branches of the Consumer Protection Council – Abuja, Minna, Bauchi, Katsina, Port Harcourt, Awka, Oshogbo and Lagos will be trained. The training will equip the CPC staff with required expertise in the application of consumer awareness regulations and international standards for management systems and requirements for products safety. CPC staff will also gain competence to deliver training to industry professionals on mandatory best practice to safeguard the rights of Nigerian consumers.
Consumer protection promotes and enforces quality standards for products and services. Effective consumer protection requires the knowledge and skills necessary for the implementation of consumer protection legislations, proper education of consumers on their rights and responsibilities, enforcement of quality requirements for products and services and the defense of consumer rights within the provisions of the law.
The NQI project funded by EC and implemented by UNIDO is very supportive of the CPC through this capacity building initiative as well as through the appointment of an International Expert on Consumer Protection posted in CPC offices. The International Expert is directly assisting CPC in its institutional re-engineering and in the training of staff on the application of consumer awareness principles and international standards for management systems.
