UNIDO Trains Lead Auditors on Food Safety Management Systems

Training sessions on ISO 22000, Food Safety Management Systems, have concluded in Abuja, after three 5-day sessions in Lagos and Abuja, respectively, which took place from 22 January to 09 February. Two sessions of Train-the-Trainer or ToT and Lead Auditor trainings were held in Lagos and the final session was held in Abuja.  

Organised by National Quality Infrastructure Project in Nigeria (NQIP), the ISO 22000 trainings are in line with the objective of building capacity of public and private stakeholders in quality standards with a view to strengthening institutional and professional capacity. The NQIP, which is funded by the European Union, and, is being implemented by United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), aims to prepare at least 120 Certified Lead Auditors and trainers approved by the International Register of Certificated Auditors (IRCA).

Each trainee completed 50 accredited hours and wrote a two-hour examination. Qualifying Lead Auditors completed 100 per cent training hours and obtained at least 70 per cent on the examination.

The beneficiary institutions include Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Consumer Protection Council (CPC), National Productivity Centre (NPC), Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA), Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), Nigerian Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (NASME), The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), and Women Entrepreneurs Association Of Nigeria (WEAN).
