UNIDO Supports Establishment of Total Quality Management (TQM) Certification Programme in Nigerian Universities

ABUJA 21 November 2018 – Total Quality Management (TQM) Trainings will hold in Nigerian universities from 26 November to 05 December, 2018. The pilot institutions are Covenant University, Ogun State, from 26 November to 30 November; and Redeemer’s University, Osun State, from 03 December to 05 December. It is expected that at least 50 professors and lecturers from these educational institutions will benefit from the trainings.

The TQM trainings are being organised within the context of UNIDO’s European Union funded National Quality Infrastructure Project in Nigeria (NQIP). In line with the Component mandate to strengthen quality culture in the country, several activities have taken place to support and build the capacity of the organised private sector. These activities include the establishment of ten training centres and two certification bodies and the development of 274 persons as certified Lead Auditors and Lead Implementers.

To further cascade the concept of quality, there is need to include Total Quality Management at tertiary education levels, commencing with the development of a university certification course and building the capacity of faculty. UNIDO will be supporting the establishment of the first tertiary programme in the field of TQM in Nigeria and the ECOWAS region.

TQM emphasises leadership, strategy, teamwork, rigorous analysis and self-assessment. The TQM Certification Programme in universities would serve as an engine for sustainability of quality culture and quality infrastructure services.
